Tuberous breasts are a common condition that affects the shape, symmetry and aesthetics of the breast. This alteration can cause the breasts to have an unaesthetic appearance due to defects in shape, asymmetries or alterations in the chest wall. If you feel that your breast has an unusual, asymmetrical or unattractive appearance, you could be dealing with tuberous breasts. This condition is characterized by insufficient development in the lower part of the breast, accompanied in many cases by a certain degree of drooping or herniation of the areola, which usually has an excessive diameter.
The cause of this aesthetic alteration lies in an increase in the density of breast and subcutaneous tissue in the submammary fold, which creates a flange that prevents normal breast development. As a result, the breast grows forward, causing a drooping of the breast and herniation of the areola, in addition to an insufficient development of the lower part of the breast.
Characteristics of tuberous breasts
Tuberous breasts have several distinctive features:
– Conical or beaked shape.
– Excessive separation between the breasts.
– Large and prominent areolas.
– Lack of development in the lower or lateral part of the breast.
– Breast asymmetry.
These characteristics can vary in shape and severity, which allows tuberous breasts to be classified into different degrees.
Intervention: Puckett technique
To correct tuberous breasts, we use the Puckett technique, which allows us to:
– Eliminate the conical or tubular shape, giving the breast a more rounded appearance.
– Add volume in the areas of the breast where development is lacking.
– Correct and/or reduce the size of the areolas.
– Improve possible asymmetries between the breasts.
– Lower the position of the submammary fold.
– Prevent the formation of a double furrow.

Tuberous breasts
The remodeling of the tuberous or tubular breast is an intervention that corrects breast malformation, increases the volume and improves the shape and appearance of the breast. It also harmonizes the proportions and balance of your figure.
The remodeling of this type of breasts is, without a doubt, one of the most complex breast aesthetic surgeries and the one in which it is more difficult to obtain a good result. There are several reasons for this: A correct diagnosis is essential, which is not always the case, especially when the surgeon has little experience or is not a specialist in plastic surgery. Once diagnosed, surgery must be carefully planned to remove the "bridle" causing the malformation. The diagnosis must be applied in surgical practice. Precise surgery is required to identify and correct the flange, which is a complex process that demands great skill and experience. It is crucial to perform a correct deployment of the mammary gland, distributing it evenly in the breast. Finally, it is necessary to choose a suitable implant (anatomical) or use fat grafting to add volume to the lower part of the breast.
In many cases, it is possible to replace the use of prostheses with fat grafting. If there is sufficient breast tissue or the patient does not wish to increase the volume, the breast can be reshaped using only the existing tissue.
Although in tubular breast surgery the gland is remodeled, at no time is the connection between the nipple and the lactiferous ducts, responsible for lactation, interrupted. Therefore, there is no anatomical reason that prevents breastfeeding after this procedure. Our extensive experience supports this, since all our patients who have been mothers and wanted to breastfeed have been able to do so without difficulty.
Complications after tuberous breast remodeling are rare, and mentioning them here is not to alarm you, but to give you complete information before making your decision. The risk of postoperative bleeding is very low, although it is normal to drain a small amount of blood and serum, usually controlled with drains that we remove the next day. Some people tend to develop thickened or reddened scars, resulting in wider scars than usual. However, this complication is very rare thanks to the suturing techniques we use and the postoperative care we provide. As in any surgery, there is a possibility of infection, although in our experience it is extremely rare and is easily treated with antibiotics if it should occur.
