Implant removal: If you decide to remove your breast implants, we can opt for a filler with your own fat (lipofilling) or remodel the existing tissue. The use of autologous fat helps to avoid sagging that may arise after implant removal.

Implant replacement: Prosthesis replacement is necessary for a variety of reasons, such as aging of the silicone prostheses, rupture, or fold formation. In this process, the current prostheses are replaced with new ones, improving both esthetics and safety.

Encapsulation correction: Implant encapsulation may require replacement of the affected prostheses. In some cases, a capsulectomy is performed to remove the old capsule, and if the implants were in a subglandular position, we reposition them in the submuscular plane for better results.

Correction of sinmastia and other complications: Problems such as synmastia (loss of the intermammary sulcus), double sulcus, rippling (formation of folds in the implant) or severe encapsulation, may necessitate a second surgery to correct and reshape the breast.

What happens if an implant ruptures?

Current implants are guaranteed for life by the manufacturer in case of rupture. Should this occur, the reaction will depend on the type of implant used. In the case of type III cohesive gel implants, a rupture would not cause silicone leakage, since there would be no free silicone in the body. However, if it is a gel of lower cohesiveness, such as types I and II, the behavior may be different. In these cases, the silicone can extend outside the capsule, which does not cause disease, but can obstruct lymphatic vessels and nodes, causing painful inflammations and susceptibility to infections in areas such as armpits and groin. In addition, silicone may accumulate in certain areas, forming uncomfortable and unaesthetic lumps.

Should I change plastic surgeon for a second surgery?

When the result is not as expected or complications arise, it is normal to wonder whether to go to the surgeon who performed the intervention or to consult another professional. Below, we offer you a small guide to act in these situations: Dissatisfied with the size, but good aesthetic result: If aesthetically the result is good, but you are not satisfied with the size, it is best to go to the same surgeon. In these cases, we recommend waiting a few months, since it is common that the initial dissatisfaction disappears and you end up accepting the result. Bad aesthetic result: The aesthetic dissatisfaction may be due to a poorly planned or executed surgery, or to the natural evolution of the breast, which may alter the initial result. We consider a bad aesthetic result the appearance of a double groove (frequent in poorly diagnosed or poorly operated tuberous breasts), sagging of the implant, the need for a mastopexy not performed from the beginning, poorly placed or hypertrophic scar, or displacement of the prosthesis when contracting the pectoral. In these cases, it is advisable to talk first with the surgeon who operated on you and discuss possible solutions, as well as get a second opinion. Poorly resolved postoperative complications: If you have had complications after surgery, first evaluate the performance of your surgeon. Did you feel well cared for? Did you receive the necessary care and revisions? In the event of a complication, it is important to first talk to the surgeon who performed the surgery and, at the same time, seek a second opinion. If you have lost confidence in your surgeon, the best thing to do is to seek another opinion, since the relationship of trust between doctor and patient is fundamental. We do not suggest you to have surgery with a surgeon you do not trust.

What complications can arise in an implant replacement surgery or second breast surgery?

Risks or complications after implant replacement are rare, but it is important that you have all the information before making a decision. There is always a small risk associated with anesthesia, although it is extremely low. That is why we perform the surgery in a hospital, where we have the appropriate technical equipment and medical staff to handle any possible complications. The anesthesiologist will perform a pre-anesthesia consultation, requesting analyses and tests to evaluate your state of health and minimize risks. Throughout the procedure, he or she will be at your side, monitoring your vital signs. Some people develop thick, red scars that may take months to flatten and lighten, becoming wider than normal. However, this complication is very rare thanks to the suturing techniques we use and the postoperative care we will provide you with. Loss of nipple sensation is uncommon, due to the location of the incision in the submammary fold and our surgical technique. Sensitivity usually normalizes in the following weeks, although during this time you may experience a strange sensation to the touch. Capsular contracture is a complication related to bacterial contamination of the prosthesis, which causes a thick capsule around the implant, hardening it and altering its shape. Thanks to our surgical technique and the high quality implants we use, the incidence of this complication is very low and is usually treated with medication. In exceptional cases, implant replacement may be required.
