Post-mastectomy breast reconstruction is an essential pillar in the comprehensive treatment of breast cancer. This procedure not only restores the aesthetics of the breast, but also contributes significantly to the improvement of self-esteem and quality of life of patients.
Breast reconstruction is a key component in the recovery process after a mastectomy, helping women regain both their physical and emotional well-being.
With over thirty years of experience in breast reconstruction, our team is dedicated to delivering results that restore confidence and the appearance of the breast.
when can breast reconstruction be performed?
Breast reconstruction surgery can be performed at different times:
During mastectomy: In some cases, reconstruction is performed at the same surgical procedure as the mastectomy.
Subsequently: Reconstruction can also be performed weeks, months or even years after the mastectomy, depending on the needs of treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Types of breast reconstruction
There are several techniques for breast reconstruction, adapted to the characteristics of each patient:
Reconstruction with implants and breast expander:
Expander: A temporary expander is placed and progressively filled with saline to stretch the skin.
Definitive Implant: After expansion, the expander is replaced by a definitive implant in a second intervention.
Reconstruction with DIEP flap:
DIEP Flap: Uses abdominal tissue (skin and fat) transferred to the chest by microsurgery, providing a natural appearance and reshaping the abdomen.
Reconstruction with latissimus dorsi muscle:
Back muscle is used, especially in cases of pectoralis muscle loss or damage from radiation therapy.
Lipofilling:
Consists of transferring fat extracted from another part of the body to the breast, improving the quality of the skin and complementing other techniques.
Reconstruction after conservative surgery:
If there is enough breast tissue left after tumor removal, a breast reduction is performed to reshape the breast. Otherwise, additional techniques are used.
Nipple and areola reconstruction:
The final stage of reconstruction, regardless of the technique used, is nipple and areola reconstruction, performed under local anesthesia and on an outpatient basis.
Recovery after mastectomy and reconstruction
Our post-mastectomy rehabilitation program is personalized for each surgery and stage of breast reconstruction. We are pioneers in Spain in offering this specialized treatment, which accelerates recovery and minimizes postoperative discomfort.
Post mastectomy breast reconstruction
Post-mastectomy breast reconstruction restores the shape of the breast, improving both aesthetics and the emotional well-being of the patient.
Not only does it not interfere, but it is facilitated, since we have the most advanced diagnostic methods, as we are part of the Breast Cancer Unit of the Quirón Hospital in Madrid. This multidisciplinary team is made up of gynecologists, surgeons, oncologists, radiotherapists, radiologists, pathologists and physiotherapists, who work in a coordinated manner, supported by state-of-the-art technology. Thanks to this broad and effective collaboration, a fast and accurate diagnosis and treatment is guaranteed. In addition, with more than 30 years of experience in breast reconstruction, both immediate and delayed, we ensure an efficient and safe control and follow-up of the disease.
The risks or complications after breast reconstruction are rare, and mentioning them here is not intended to alarm you, but to give you the information you need to make a well-informed decision. The risk of postoperative bleeding is low, although it is normal to drain a small amount of blood and serum. There is always an anesthetic risk to consider, although this is extremely small. Side effects from anesthesia or sedation are rare, but can be serious, so the surgery is performed in a hospital equipped with the staff and resources to deal with any complications. The anesthesiologist will give you a pre-anesthetic consultation and order tests and analyses to assess your health and possible risks. From the beginning of the surgery until its completion, the anesthesiologist will continuously monitor your vital signs. Sometimes small seromas may form in the breast or back area (in case of dorsal reconstruction), which are fluid accumulations easy to treat in consultation. In some patients, the scars can be thick and reddened, taking months to flatten and lighten, being wider than usual. However, this complication is very rare thanks to our suturing techniques and postoperative care that we will indicate. When breast prostheses are used, capsular contracture can develop, a complication that occurs when the prosthesis is covered with a thick capsule, altering its shape and consistency. This problem is related to a possible bacterial contamination of the prosthesis. In our experience, thanks to our surgical technique and the use of high quality prostheses, this complication is rare and, in most cases, can be treated medically. However, in some situations implant replacement may be required, especially in skins that have received radiation therapy, where the risk is higher. Finally, although infection is a possibility in any surgery, in our experience, thanks to the use of antibiotics and meticulously sterile surgical technique, this complication is extremely rare.
